The Food Delivery Boom 🍔🍕🍖🍜
The past 14+ months saw a huge increase in online food ordering services🚘. Many turned to deliver food on these services to supplement lost income during that time. Although it helps provide some with a few more bucks💲, there are risks involved. Here are 5 ways delivery drivers can mitigate risks:
1) Review The Map Before You Deliver 🗺
Before accepting an order, be sure to take a look at the map that displays on your screen. If the order comes from an area that you may not be comfortable delivering to, simply decline the order. You are never punished for declining an order. If you are using an app that does not let you review the map (like Uber eats) then don’t be afraid to cancel the order. If you are nervous about how the platform or employer will react to a canceled order, then give them a call to explain the situation. Your safety is the #1 priority. 🙏
2) Deliver Between Dawn and Dusk 🌞
If you are able, choose to deliver during daylight hours. Delivering during daylight hours is a simple way to help ensure your safety. When it’s light out, more people are around and there is less potential to get lost on your route. Not knowing where you are can be unsettling, but having nobody to ask for directions is even worse🤦♂️! Sunlight will also help you feel more confident approaching a door.
3) Keep Your Gas Tank Full ⛽
If you stay prepared, you will never have to rush to get prepared. Keeping your gas tank full is a good habit to form if you are a food delivery driver because it’s one less thing to worry about if you find yourself in an area that feels unsafe.
4) Organize Your Center Console 🚙
A clean and organized middle console is a good habit to form. If you need to grab anything in a hurry, you won’t have to waste time scrambling for it🏃♂️. Items you can keep in your middle console for safety include an extra phone charger, pepper spray, or a self-defense keychain.
5) Go With Your Gut 🤔
If your gut is telling you that something is off, then trust it. Never deliver to a house that looks vacant🏡, keep people at an arm’s length distance, and if an emergency occurs, only remain at the scene if it is absolutely necessary.
Smartphone? More like Safephone 📱🦺
Some of the most underappreciated innovations of modern-day smartphones are the ones that make you safe! Below are a few of them:
● 📍Share your location: If you find yourself feeling uncomfortable when driving to a certain part of town, share your location with your friends and family👨👩👧👦.
● 🔦Use your flashlight: If it’s dark when you are approaching a path, use your phone's flashlight to help guide your way.
● 📞Make a phone call: An old-fashioned phone call with a friend while you are walking or using public transportation will help put your nerves at ease.
● 🆘Emergency SOS feature: For Apple users, the built-in SOS feature will automatically call your local emergency number when activated. You can also program specific contacts to be called as well. Details for the Apple SOS feature can be found here and for Samsung here.
What & Why 🤔 🤷♀️
What: IStun2 📱⚡
If you thought the image above was a smartphone you’d be mistaken. But you wouldn't be the only one surprised😲. The IStun2 is a stun gun designed to emulate a modern-day smartphone. This rechargeable stun gun is sized to be placed in a pocket or bag 👜and has an LED flashlight feature.
Why: Fathers Day is right around the corner 🧔
Smartphones have made the world safer, but there are still are threats. Many don’t feel comfortable walking around with a brutish stun device, so the IStun resembles an item we are all used to seeing. The best part is, it’s currently on sale just in time for fathers day.
