Did a Senator Advocate Home Seat Belts? 💺
We also discuss work from home safety, physical office security, and how to pull off the perfect crime. Estimated read time: Less than 4 minutes.
What started as a routine zoom Board Meeting, quickly turned into a comical display of special effects🎭. Ohio Senator Andrew Brenner was on the public live-streamed call when viewers noticed he appeared to be wearing a seatbelt in his home office. After further examination, it became obvious the senator was driving in his car, using a digital background to create the illusion he was not.
“Senator Brenner was simply following the law, using hands-free audio technology," a spokesperson on his behalf stated.
Ironically that same day the state was considering legislation that would crackdown on distracted drivers.
Zoom Call Safety Tips 🖥
Zoom has 300 million meeting participants per day. That was a 2900% increase compared to its pre-pandemic range😲. Zoom and similar platforms help increase work from home productivity, but that doesn't mean their systems are always used securely.
Here are 5 Tips to make sure you are video conferencing securely:
🔐Make a meeting ID and Password: Hackers use a tactic called “War Dialing”. This process guesses meeting IDs with the goal of entering calls uninvited. A password helps prevent these war dialers from getting in even if they can guess your meeting ID.
☑Only Allow Authenticated Users: This setting requires users to have a specific email domain address to enter your call. This will ensure all users on your internal call have an affiliation with your organization.
🖱Enable Screen Share To Host-Only: If an unwanted attendee does enter your zoom meeting, this will prevent them from displaying any unwanted or inappropriate images.
🎥Be mindful of what's in your camera view: You don’t want sensitive documents to be exposed during a call. You also want to be sure you are not giving too much information about your physical location. Such as a window exposing your street address, or a safe in view in which you hold valuables.
🖼Use a Background: You can avoid all of the concerns from #4 with a zoom background. Here’s a list of some of the best free zoom backgrounds you can use.
Workplace Safety Tips 🏦:
Security standards for physical offices have changed. Below are the simplest ways you can decrease the chance of being breached with a physical threat.
⛔Create a Blocklist: If you are in business long enough, you are likely to endure people who aren't your biggest fans😐. From disgruntled former employees to previous begrudging customers, there are people you would not want in the physical premise of your business. Your receptionists or gatekeepers should have a blocklist handy.
📶Give Unique Wi-Fi Credentials: Guest Wi-Fi access is a common practice amongst establishments. Unique Wifi Credentials allow you to easily track the network usage of someone you may not know that well.
💳Go Badgeless: It’s common for larger business buildings with big staffs to have a badge system for entry. But they are inherently flawed. Badge cloning devices can now be bought online inexpensively. It’s a good idea to upgrade your entry process to something like the Kisi entry software, which allows employees to use their smart devices for entry.
🤸♀️Train Employees: One of the most common reasons for security breaches is human user error, not software issues. Educate your employees on the WHY behind your security protocols. Otherwise, employees may just see them as a nuisance and will be more likely to cut corners. Remind employees how to create strong passwords, the importance of locking their computer screen, and the proper process of receiving packages or visitors.
