Sir Richard Reaches Space, But Not Without Risk🌌
Richard Branson lived out his childhood dream on Sunday by becoming the first billionaire to travel into space on a spacecraft he helped fund called VSS Unity (the name of the SpaceShipTwo). Branson flew about 2,300 mph to the edge of space😵, accompanied by three other crewmates and two pilots. Branson’s mission in making this historic feat was to “make space more accessible to all”. The one-hour flight took off from a small, yet fittingly-named small town called Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
The consequences included extreme safety, and life-threatening risks. Below we’ll break down some of the dangers Richard Branson had to accept when taking on the [ad]venture:
👨✈️Limited commercial pilot training could cause an error. In fact, a prior test flight from Virgin in 2014 lead to the crash of SpaceShipTwo, and ultimate death of one pilot
💻The onboard computer could lose connection. Unlike in a commercial plane, where a flight can navigate safely in such an occurrence, that may not be the case when flying into space.
✈The “feathering system”, which allows the space plane’s wings to fold up when descending back to earth, could malfunction, a probable cause of the 2014 deadly crash of SpaceShipTwo
🔥The rocket motor could fail to light up, which could lead to a fast and deadly explosion even before the spaceship takes off
😓The cabin could lose pressure and threaten the passengers’ lives when that pressure is crucial
But wait.. There’s Good News 😅
Richard Branson made it back safely and the billionaire space race could help pave the way for safer, more frequent space travel.
Here are some tips to help you travel safely to space when you (and the rest of humanity) are ready. Spoiler alert: many of these tips can be helpful for your Earth travels as well.
☑Use a checklist. According to former NASA astronaut Frederick “Rick” Hauck, a checklist can help keep you organized and ensure you have everything you need for a long journey ahead
🧳Pack lightly. Charles Walker, who flew on three Space Shuttle missions, suggests considering both volume and weight for space and terrestrial travel.
👀Pay attention to your surroundings. Nicole Stott, whose experience includes two spaceflights and 104 days living and working in space suggests this tip not only for safety, but also for simply enjoying the experience.
🏋️♂️Train for the expected “G-force” by building up your body’s tolerance in the centrifuge. The centrifuge will simulate the feeling of a horizontal takeoff while adding audio and visual cues that replicate what people will see and hear on the actual flight. Since we’re using these tips to help with both space and Earth, make sure you’re physically fit for your destination.
